Regional Summit Follow Up Conference
This event is co-hosted by the Department of Higher Education (DHE) and the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development (EOLWD), with the participation of the Executive Office Housing and Economic Development (EOHED). It follows up on the 2008 regional workforce summits and the October 2007 meeting of college presidents that was convened by the Board of Higher Education and the Executive Office of Labor & Workforce Development. The meeting will be held at Holyoke Community College from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
It is challenging to identify high-demand jobs in an economic downturn, but we know that the recovery will renew the demand for skilled workers with post-secondary education. It is imperative that education, business, and workforce leaders continue to collaborate to create the pipeline to meet future needs of the Commonwealth. This will require greater alignment of higher education capacity and regional economic and workforce goals and the development of regional collaborations in key and emerging economic sectors, particularly health care and clean energy.
At the meeting we will provide an overview of the need for stronger higher education/workforce collaboration and present updated demand data in key fields. This information will serve as the framework for a facilitated discussion about critical opportunities in the western region in order to identify some key programs that respond to the region’s critical workforce needs. This discussion will inform the Commonwealth’s workforce/education strategies and the distribution of appropriate funds, including those from the federal Economic Stimulus legislation.
We look forward to a productive meeting on July 8. We ask that you RSVP to Stacy Bougie, Senior Administrative Coordinator at the DHE at sbougie@bhe.mass.edu by July 1, 2009 to confirm your attendance.
